Chapter Nine

“I need my pictures.”

Bear glanced down at Andrew, who was still cuddled up in his lap. He had been so quiet for the last hour, Bear thought the man had fallen asleep. “What that, baby?”

Blue eyes blinked up at Bear. “I need my pictures.”

Bear frowned as a memory filtered through his brain. “The ones on the shelf in your room?”

“Yes.” Andrew’s eyes filled. “I need to get them before Norma destroys them. The last time I didn’t do what she wanted, I found my parents’ wedding picture in the garbage disposal.”

“What didn’t you do?”

“I told her I couldn’t afford to buy her a brand-new car every year.” Andrew swallowed hard, his eyes misting as if remembering the incident. “She didn’t take it well.”

Just one more thing he could lay at Norma’s feet in a long line of things that hateful bitch had done. Bear prayed that the sheriff would be able to get together enough evidence to put Norma and her cousin away for a very longtime. Prison was the safest place for them.

“I’ll get your pictures back for you, Andrew. I promise.” The relief in the man’s eyes made Bear want to cry. Andrew had just been handed one fucked-up bit of life after another. It wasn’t fair. “Is there anything else you need?”

“No, not really,” Andrew said. “Norma picked out all my clothes for me and most everything in the house is stuff she chose. Anything important to me I had put in the storage unit across town that my parents had before they died. I don’t even think Norma knows about it.”

“Let’s hope not,” Bear replied. “We’ll have Nick go check on it just to be safe.”

“Check on what?” Nick asked as he walked inside the cabin.

“Andrew has a storage unit on the other side of town. We’re worried Norma might do something with it. We thought you could go check on it.”

“Yeah, sure.” Nick nodded. “I can do that.”

“He also has some pictures at the house that he wants to get a hold of before Norma destroys them.” Bear remembered the layout of the house from his visit before and started making plans to break into the place and steal the pictures if he had to.

“I know that look on your face, Bear,” Nick said. “There’s an easier way.”

Bear arched a brow.

Nick rolled his eyes. “If Andrew signs an affidavit giving you permission to enter his home and retrieve specific items he lists, and he gives it to the sheriff, I can escort you to his house and force Norma to allow you inside. There is nothing she can do.”

Bear warmed to that idea immediately, but he still had concerns. “Norma is going to know something is up the moment we show up on her doorstep.”

“That is true,” Nick agreed. “But at least this way, it will all be above board and legal. As long as we have permission from Andrew, there isn’t much she can do about it. I also think it would be a good idea to have a deputy there to witness anything that might happen.
